Conquering Fear and General Guide to Fun

Those loud, tall, twisty roller coasters may look scary to some, but remember they won't hurt you. People love them because they are fun, they spend a lot of money and wait many hours just for a few seconds on a ride. After sucking up your fears for a few rides you will soon crave the forces! Here are some tips to help conquer your fears and get the most out of your rides:

    If You Are Afraid
  • Start on steel-track coasters - Wooden coasters don't look as scary as steel coasters because they don't have loops, however they are the roughest to ride. Remember some coasters can be supported by wood, but use a steel track (for example the Gemini at Cedar Point)
  • Sit in the middle-front if you are afraid. A lot of new riders think sitting in the back will be less intense, however I find the back to be the shakiest, roughest and least fun to ride. Anywhere from the middle to front should be where to aim. The awfulness of the back may add to your coaster-dislike.
  • Remember it is natural to be afraid if you are inexperienced, but most people can't wait to ride coasters. Must not be so scary after all huh?
General Guide to get the Best Ride Experience
  • Typically, the front corner seat is the best because of design speed, higher wind resistance and track sight. The back is the worst due to shakiness and design speed. Wait a few extra minutes for that front seat, don't waste a 45 minute wait on a not-so-great experience.
  • Go for the short lines. Once my friends wanted to skip a short line to go to another area because "it will have less people and shorter lines", they were wrong and we had long lines the rest of the day. If you see a good ride with a short line, go for it!
  • Be with a small group that has similar tastes - A large group makes majority decisions, they might make you sit in a boring seat, wait for a boring ride or do something else you aren't into. Do your best to split up if you can, bring a cell phone or discuss a meeting place if necessary. And try not to go with people who have different tastes, nobody wants to have to sit a ride out because one person is afraid.
  • Pack a lunch. Theme parks are way overpriced so bring a cooler with some sandwiches, you are free to leave the park and return. Don't pay for the $3 bottles of water, go into a restaurant and ask for a cup of water, it should be free.
